Stomach Worms

Stomach worms (Habronema muscae and Draschia megastoma) attach themselves to the stomach wall or they may be free. Their life cycle (Figure 10-4) must be taken into account for management practices. The eggs are laid in the stomach and pass out in the feces. The maggots of flies that breed in horse manure eat the eggs. The worm egg hatches and stays inside the fly maggot until an adult fly is formed. The larva leaves the fly when it is feeding around the liquid secretions of the horse’s lips. The larvae are swallowed and go to the stomach, where they mature and lay eggs. They can cause stomach inflammations and colic. Controlling stomach worms requires manure removal, fly control, and deworming medication.
